ALF EVERS
WOODSTOCK TOWN HISTORIAN
Alf was a friend of Dr. James T. Shotwell and as I sketched this picture he told me about attending Dr. Shotwell's 80th birthday. He said the distinguished guests included Thomas Watson, founder of IBM, and Norman Cousins, editor of the Saturday Review.
Dr.Shotwell's gravestone, with a  full-sized Templar sword carved on its face, rests in the Woodstock Artist's Cemetery.
Here is an interesting quote by Dr.Shotwell,
" Government by committee is necessary when the sovreign power resides in a large legislative body."
Dr. Shotwell's autobiography reveals he was the guiding hand behind both the Covenant of the League of Nations and the United Nations Charter.
